PMA to Host Audioconference on Retail Organics Rules

NEWARK, Del. - On Sept. 12, the Produce Marketing Association will present a members-only audioconference to provide retailers with last-minute advice and guidance regarding regulations for the soon-to-be mandatory U.S. national organics standards.

The "Organics: New Rules for Retailers" teleconference will also feature a question-and-answer session with two expert speakers who will target rules about retail handling, display and labeling.

With the new national rules for organics going into effect in mid-October, PMA leaders said there was a need to give members a final opportunity to familiarize themselves with the important information they will need to ensure they handle organic produce properly under the new regulations.

As of Oct. 21, all organic production and handling operations must be certified to use the USDA organic seal on fresh and processed products or be prepared for stiff fines if they are caught violating the provisions of the new rule.

"We wanted to do [the audioconference] in an interactive, readily accessible, low-cost manner," said PMA chairman Tim York of Markon Cooperative.

Speaking during the audioconference are Tonya Antle of Natural Selection Foods and Leslie Krasny from PMA legal counsel, Keller & Heckman LLP. For more information, visit www.pma.com.
