Price Chopper Debuts Ben & Bill's Deli
SCHENECTADY, NY -- Price Chopper here yesterday opened Ben & Bill's Deli -- billed by the Northeast regional retailer as "the Best N.Y.C.-style deli between Manhattan and Montreal" -- inside the Price Chopper in Slingerlands, N.Y. The new feature is part of a 10,000-square-foot addition to the now 83,000-square-foot store.
Price Chopper director of public relations and consumer services Mona Golub told Progressive Grocer that the deli had a soft opening yesterday and would be the site for a press event tomorrow. The Slingerlands store's grand reopening is on Sunday, May 14.
The deli restaurant was named for brothers Ben and Bill Golub, who in 1932 converted the family wholesale business into Central Markets, the forerunner of the Price Chopper chain. The company, which operates 110 stores, is currently run by the fourth generation of Golubs.
Mona Golub characterized the deli as "a first of its kind for us" and "a singular offer." She declined to say whether the retailer might add Ben & Bill's Delis to its other stores.
"In search of classic deli perfection, we studied the masters -- the Stage, Carnegie, 2nd Ave., Katz's, and Ben's in N.Y.C., as well Albany's own deli Mecca of the past, Joe's," noted the retailer in a statement. "The result: a lovingly crafted menu, which includes...corned beef and pastrami, fresh-roasted turkey and roast beef, fresh crusty rye bread baked daily on the premises, premium dill pickles, hearty soups...smoked fish, and ...cheesecake." The company added that Ben & Bill's would also offer triple-decker sandwiches with Russian dressing, once a signature offering at Joe's.
Mona Golub noted that president and c.e.o. Neil Golub has "a penchant for top-notch New York City-style deli," and didn't want customers to have to go all the way to Manhattan for an authentic nosh.
Other additions to the Slingerlands store include a Starbucks and "a number of new offerings," according to Mona Golub.
