Price Chopper Marks American Diabetes Month

Price Chopper is presenting a range of food and health-related programs to mark American Diabetes Month, a national awareness-raising effort by the American Diabetes Association.

"The presence of diabetes is growing in our communities," observed Kathy Bryant, VP of pharmacy at Schenectady, N.Y.-based Price Chopper. "The American Diabetes Association has shown that 9.3 percent of the American population has diabetes, which is an increase from 8.3 percent in 2010. Preventing complications from diabetes and managing glucose and cholesterol is vital for patients."

The Northeast regional grocery chain's pharmacy is encouraging membership in its Diabetes AdvantEdge Program, which provides participants with free diabetes medications and supplies, as well as a blood glucose meter at no charge.

Beyond the pharmacy, the Cooking School at Market Bistro, a fresh-focused banner operated by Price Chopper, will hold two diabetes-oriented cooking classes: Hands On: Dining with Diabetes on Nov. 12, and Lunch and Learn: Luvin' Lunch with Diabetes on Nov. 20. Senior Nutritionist Ellie Wilson and pharmacist Justin George will be available at both classes to answer attendees’ questions.

Further, Price Chopper will host a Facebook chat featuring a panel of experts that includes company dietitians and pharmacists, along with a certified diabetes educator, on the grocer's Facebook page on Nov. 13 at 12 p.m.

According to the American Diabetes Association, almost 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, and another 86 million Americans have prediabetes.

The Golub Corp. owns and operates 134 Price Chopper grocery stores in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Golub's 22,000 associates collectively own more than 47 percent of the company’s privately held stock, making it one of the nation’s largest privately held corporations that is predominantly employee-owned.
