Price Chopper Opens 113th Store

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Price Chopper Supermarkets, based here, yesterday opened a 45,000-square-foot Super Center in Owego, N.Y., marking its 113th store. Employing about 118 full-and part-time associates, the 24-hour store was specifically designed to service smaller communities and rural areas, according to the retailer.

Present at the ribbon-"chopping" ceremony for the store were Price Chopper president and c.e.o. Neil Golub, Owego's mayor Ed Arrington, town supervisor Carol Sweeney, and other civic and political leaders.

"True to our name, everything we offer is at our traditional low Price Chopper prices," said Golub in a statement. "We are committed to bringing 'the best in fresh...and low prices' to Owego. I'm confident that our guests will appreciate the superior quality and value of what we have to offer."

As well as groceries, general merchandise, and health and beauty care items, the store includes the grocer's signature perishable departments such as produce, featuring a huge assortment of exotic and seasonal fruits and vegetables; meat, where shoppers can find cooking tips on every package, recipe cards, and free brochures with information on how to choose and prepare fresh meats; and bakery, which stocks LaBrea Artisan breads in over 15 varieties, with seafood, deli, and floral sections also offering convenience and wide selections of products.

The Oswego site is a reopening as part of the Northeast regional grocer's acquisition of six stores in central New York from Williamsville, N.Y.-based Tops Markets, LLC, an Ahold USA banner. In October 2005, Price Chopper reopened the former Tops stores in Fulton, Oswego, and Oneida; and the second phase of the project encompasses the stores in Owego, Sidney, and Tupper Lake. Sidney is slated to open in a few months, but the timing of the Tupper Lake store opening hasn't been determined.

The Golub Corp. owns and operates 113 Price Chopper stores in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The family-owned company's approximately 23,000 associates collectively own 55 percent of its privately held stock.
