Productivity, Ease of Use Drives Maywood Market POS Deployment
Community-based independent Maywood Market plans to install a new point-of-sale (POS) and back-office solution to provide a faster and more convenient shopping experience, and to run in-store promotions more effectively.
For the front of the store, the Maywood, Ill.-based grocer chose NCR Advanced Checkout Solution (ACS), for grocery retailers, and each checkout lane will be equipped with Duluth, Ga.-based NCR’s RealPOS High Performance Bi-Optic Scanner/Scale, RealPOS 80XRT workstation, and RealPOS DynaKey cashier interface, as well as a credit/debit card reader with signature capture.
The solutions were sold and serviced by NCR authorized reseller North Country Business Products (NCBP), which is based in Bemidji, Minn.
“We want every aspect of this store to demonstrate our long-term commitment to the community,” said Maywood Market GM Dimitri Stathopoulos. “For us, that means using NCR technology, which has a reputation for performance and reliability. And NCBP [will] assure a smooth deployment — including staging, installation, and training — plus ongoing help-desk and maintenance services.”
Stathopoulos expects the combination of new software and the DynaKey interface to reduce cashier training and increase productivity. “This will prove especially important to us during startup,” he said. “We plan to hire within the community, and some of our employees may not have much previous retail experience.”
According to the retailer, most of Maywood’s food stores disappeared in the decades after a large manufacturing operation there closed in 1975. But earlier this year, three investors began working with local officials to help rejuvenate Maywood by bringing full-service grocery shopping back to the community’s residents. Expected to open in early 2010, Maywood Market will contain a bakery, meat and seafood departments, a deli, a frozen food section, fresh fruits and vegetables, and dairy products.
The retailer will also implement Retail BOSS, a back-office software package from Melville, N.Y.-based BRdata that is designed to manage and maintain all of the areas of the business, from automation of in-store functions to distribution and price management, and the NCR ACS Consumer Marketing (CM) module.
“ACS CM is designed to let us quickly and readily create promotions in the store, with no special computer knowledge or support,” explained Stathopoulos. “Best of all, we’ll have great flexibility to come up with offers that are exciting and relevant to our customers, and execute them accurately at the checkout.”
