Publix Aims to Become Key Player in Nashville Market

LAKELAND, Fla. - Publix Super Markets Inc., which recently announced plans to enter the Nashville, Tenn., market with the purchase of seven Albertson's supermarkets and one Albertson's fuel center and convenience store, has said it plans further expansion in the area as it aims to become a dominant player in the Nashville market, the Nashville Business Journal reports.

"We are looking at additional locations. We are not ready to announce any that have been signed, but we are looking," said Brenda Reid, Publix spokeswoman. "We don't anticipate to come in that market and stay small. We don't want to be No. 6."

Last year the Lakeland, Fla., company said it wanted to add 340 stores. It now has about 700 stores in Florida, South Carolina and Georgia. The first of five Alabama stores are set to open in July, according to the Nashville Business Journal.

While two of the Tennesse stores are scheduled to open in October, at least one store will be completely gutted and possibly torn down, the journal reports.
