Publix Buys DC in Pompano Beach, Fla.

Lakeland, Fla.-based Publix Super Markets purchased an industrial facility in Pompano Beach, Fla. that it will use as a drop point for suppliers to unload goods for area Publix stores. The acquisition comes just over a month since the grocer announced plans to build a new 970,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center in Orlando.

As reported by Progressive Grocer earlier this week, Publix plans to open around 20 of the Albertsons stores it purchased and recently converted by the end of this year with more to follow next year. All the former Albertsons stores are in Florida. Publix also told Progressive Grocer recently that the economy has not affected its almost constant stream of new store openings.

The grocer acquired the 32,832 square foot Pompano Beach facility for $4.7 million or about $143 per square foot, according to a report by CoStar Group Inc., a commercial real estate information company. The building sits on about eight acres and has 16 loading docks and a ceiling height of 22 feet.
