Publix Launches Free Prescription Drug Program
LAKELAND, Fla. -- In a new initiative that rivals Wal-Mart's discount-drug program, regional grocer Publix Super Markets here has begun offering free prescriptions for seven popular oral antibiotics at its 684 in-store pharmacies.
The antibiotics in the program are amoxicillin, cephalexin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP), ciprofloxacin (excluding ciprofloxacin XR), penicillin VK, ampicillin, and erythromycin (excluding Ery-Tab).
Publix said these antibiotics account for almost 50 percent of the generic pediatric prescriptions it fills.
Publix said it is not limiting the number of prescriptions customers may fill for free, and that the antibiotics are offered to customers regardless of their prescription insurance provider.
