Publix Supports Kids' Nutrition Education Program

Publix Super Markets is helping to kick off "Eat Smart for a Healthy Start," a week-long campaign for Orange County Florida Public Schools' Food & Nutrition Services, along with PBS KIDS and Produce for Kids, an organization backed by Vidalia onion marketer Shuman Produce, Inc.

In the campaign's opening, five area elementary schools greeted PBS KIDS host Miss Rosa and PBS KIDS characters Dot and Dash at a special luncheon for the students.

The national campaign raises awareness for both kids and parents of the role fresh fruits and vegetables play in a healthy diet.

Publix and local produce companies donated product giveaways for the five elementary schools' students to take home and share with their parents, including food samples, product coupons, activity sheets and newsletters in the green Publix reusable bag.

Orange County Public School Food & Nutrition Services was selected by Produce for Kids to be the first school district in the country to kick-off the month-long national promotion. The school service delivers more than 24 million meals and snacks that meet strict requirements each year. The number of meals served in high schools increased by 26 percent in 2007-2008 and 6 percent district-wide. The department brings in more than $36 million in federal monies to the district.
