Remodeled Super 1 Foods Store to Feature ‘Drug Store-Within-Store’

Brookshire Grocery Co. has placed the pharmacy department front and center in a remodeled Super 1 Foods store set to have a grand reopening June 24 in Lafayette, La.

“This will be the first store in our company with a ‘drugstore-within-a-store’ concept,” said Jim Cousineau, VP, pharmacy operations for Tyler, Texas-based Brookshire Grocery Co., parent of Super 1. “We have relocated the pharmacy near the front entrance and doubled the size of the department.”

Cousineau said the changes would allow the store to stock a wider selection of health and beauty products and devote sections to diabetes, sleep, and therapeutic aids and supplies. New drop-off and checkout areas were added, as well as additional office space for a fully equipped health services and consultation center. Another new offering will be durable medical equipment, which can be costly for customers and isn’t carried in some supermarket pharmacies.

“We will offer Medicare and Medicaid billing on durable medical equipment and Medicare billing on the diabetic supplies,” Cousineau said. “We want to help people obtain the equipment they need through these billing options.”

Even the store exterior will tout the pharmacy with a marquee displaying the Super 1 Foods logo along with the words “& Discount Pharmacy.”

Other changes to the store include fresh paint and polished concrete flooring; new cases, workstations and registers; a re-striped parking lot; an updated fuel center kiosk; remodeled bathrooms; and a new floral department.

Cousineau added that Super 1 Foods’ generic prescription program offers up to a 90-day supply for $9.99 on more than 400 generic medications.
