Roche Bros. Aids Sick Kids, a Nickel at a Time
Under Roche Bros.' "Go Green for Children's" program, customers who use a reusable grocery bag get a 5-cent rebate to keep for themselves or donate to Boston Children's Hospital. This year's program raised $50,972.30 for the hospital – more than 1 million nickels, and 10,000 nickels (or $500) more than was raised in 2013.
With the 2014 donation, Wellesley, Mass.-based Roche Bros. has surpassed $500,000 in donations to the hospital. In honor of the occasion, Boston Children's will unveil a special recognition plaque on June 25 at 10 a.m. in the hospital's Mandell Building.
"Roche Bros.' continued generosity speaks to the quality of their employees, as well as their outstanding commitment to serving children in their community," said Carola Cadley, VP of corporate development and special events at Boston Children's Hospital Trust.
The event will also include a check presentation and recognition for the Roche Bros. locations with the highest reusable-bag donations. This year, the Millis, Mass., store was the top fundraiser, while the Sudbury, Mass., location was the most improved, with a 105 percent increase in donations.
"It's our customers' generosity that allows us to provide this level of support to Boston Children's Hospital," noted Roche Bros. Director of Community Relations Janet O'Connor. "We are thankful to all the customers who bring in their reusable grocery bags and then pass on their rebate for Boston Children’s. Lots of small actions add up to a big impact."
Roche Bros. additionally supports the facility by sponsoring the annual NSTAR Walk for Boston Children's Hospital. Customers can continue to take part in the 2014 "Go Green for Children's" program by bringing recyclable bags to participating stores.
Family-owned Roche Bros. employs more than 4,600 associates at 19 Roche Bros., Sudbury Farms and Brothers Marketplace grocery stores.
