Roundy's Opens New Store in W. Milwaukee; Reopens Unit after Collapse
MILWAUKEE -- Roundy's Supermarkets, Inc. here opened the doors to its latest supermarket in West Milwaukee this week. The 60,000-plus square foot Pick 'n Save store was built on the site of the former Hotpoint appliance factory, and is a key part of the revival of the old warehouse district here into a vibrant retail corridor.
The grand opening party at the new store featured a "Spring Celebration" theme and included food sampling, face painting, a chance to win prizes, and performances by the West Milwaukee Middle School Orchestra, the West Allis Central High School Orchestra, and Mini Mariachi Real Azteca, said the company.
In other news, Roundy's said it would reopen the Brookfield Pick 'n Save store that had had its roof caved in last Thursday, March 1. Roundy's said the unit had passed all inspections required on its roof reconstruction project and would reopen this morning.
A 90 ft. x 60 ft. section of the 90,000-square-foot store's roof had collapsed shortly after 8:00 a.m. last Thursday. No one was hurt, and customers and employees inside the store at the time were quickly evacuated. The reason for the roof collapse has not yet been determined, but the structural integrity of the store has been determined to be sound, the company said.
"We had an all hands on deck situation where, after we were given the safety green light by inspectors and officials, our employees and vendors worked side by side, long hours, to put the store back in shape for our customers," said Robert Mariano, Roundy's chairman and c.e.o. "Construction crews virtually worked around the clock to build an interior wall around the gap while rebuilding the roof over it. Some spirited teamwork took place here and a great looking store will be in place for our customers on Thursday."
Customers will see what appears to be a new wall in the store, the only sign of change. Even though the store will operate for a while with less square footage, the same full range of products will be available, but in slightly less quantity in some product lines.
Mariano said the integrity of the structure is sound and the only construction is occurring inside the walled area. Some departments, like produce, have been reconfigured to account for the loss of floor space. All perishable products inside the store at the time of the collapse - dairy, frozen, produce, meat, deli - were removed even though they were not damaged or temperature-compromised.
