Save Mart Project Among InfoWorld 100 Top IT Solutions for 2009

Regional independent grocer Save Mart was named one of the companies having the top 100 IT solutions by IDG’s InfoWorld magazine, in an award program that honors IT projects that exemplify intelligent, creative uses of technology to meet business and technical objectives.

The Modesto, Calif.-based chain was honored for migrating its retail operations from proprietary solutions to an open source-based architecture centered on Ingres and SUSE Linux as a result of its acquisition of 125 additional grocery stores. The project was led by Save Mart CIO James Sims and conducted with Redwood City, Calif.-based Ingres Corp.

“We’d like to sincerely congratulate Save Mart, [which has] made open source and Ingres Database a critical part of their operations,” said Deb Woods, VP of product management at the vendor. “Ingres is in the business of helping enterprises innovate and save big on IT costs and it is rewarding to work with courageous CIOs like James, who isn’t afraid to stand up to the ‘Big Software’ model.”

Every year, the InfoWorld 100 Awards recognize 100 IT organizations that have implemented and integrated technologies innovatively in pursuit of concrete business goals. To be considered, projects must use multiple technologies in groundbreaking ways to serve well-defined business goals. Profiles of winners, along with InfoWorld’s editorial analysis and insight, are available at www.InfoWorld.com.

Save Mart Supermarkets operates approximately 250 stores throughout northern California and northern Nevada under the Save Mart, S-Mart Foods, Lucky, and FoodMaxx banners.
