Schnucks Opening New Marketplace Unit
ST. LOUIS - Associates and vendors of Schnucks Markets based here are putting the finishing touches on the family-held retailer's new Westfall Plaza store, which the chain said will open today.
The new store, its latest in the successful "marketplace" format, is a consolidation of former Schnucks locations in Jennings and Dellwood, Mo., both of which closed permanently on Sunday, Oct. 8.

The new 63,000-square-foot unit is similar to a store Schnuck's opened in south St. Louis in August.
"The 'marketplace' format has proved to be very popular with our shoppers at our prior locations," said Scott Schnuck, the grocer's president and c.e.o. "The Dellwood and Jennings stores are just three miles apart, and the new store is located almost exactly halfway between them. We believe that this store location, along with its expanded services and customer-friendly floor plan, will not only allow us to better serve current customers but also help attract many new ones," said Schnuck.
Mike Stein, a 33-year Schnucks veteran and former store manager at the chain's Jennings store, will take the helm at Westfall Plaza, while co-manager Jane Wilcox and an experienced management team will assist him.
"We have assembled a team dedicated to their work and to friendly customer service," Stein said. "I'm looking forward to personally greeting as many customers as possible, both current and new, over the next few weeks."
When Schnucks originally opened the 17,000-square-foot Dellwood location in 1955, the opening marked the company's first significant expansion its first new store built from the ground up. It was also the first Schnucks to have a service bakery. A 52,000-square-foot unit later replaced the store in 1974. The 47,000-square-foot Jennings store was acquired from National in 1995.
Founded in St. Louis in 1939, Schnuck Markets, Inc. operates 102 stores (including five Logli stores) and 99 pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Mississippi and Iowa.
