Schnucks Readies for Produce University
Schnuck Markets, Inc. invited shoppers to participate in Frieda's Produce University on Nov. 15., to give them hands-on education about non-traditional fresh fruits and vegetables for fall, as well as unusual gourmet items.
During the day-long open house, taking place at all Schnucks and Logli locations, produce managers will be on hand to answer questions and give customers the chance to see, touch, and taste a variety of fresh foods.
The program is an extension of an earlier one-day education event. "We received a great response from our summer Produce University event," said Mike O'Brien, Schnucks' v.p. of produce. "Enlightening our customers about specialty fruits and vegetables broadens their tastes and cooking expertise, and highlights our produce teams as knowledgeable and dependable resources."
O'Brien said the Produce University sessions at Schnucks stores focus on seasonally available produce, such as specialty citrus in the winter, or fresh herbs and greens in the spring.
The upcoming session will focus on fall and winter favorites, including organic Klamath pearl potatoes and assorted fingerling potatoes - two gourmet spud varieties with astounding culinary versatility. Specialty fruit highlights will include fresh pomegranates, quince and Fuyu persimmons. Frieda's Tomato Toss, a flavorful blend of dried tomatoes and herbs, will also be sampled during the event.
The St. Louis-based family grocer, which operates more than 100 stores in seven states: is encouraging shoppers to drop in anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., to sample some of these items, learn about nutritional values and discover ways to incorporate these unique and exciting ingredients into meals.
Since 1989, Frieda's Produce University, a program created by specialty propduce distributor Frieda's, Inc., has helped educate consumers with in-depth product information, preparation ideas, and samples.
