Second Harvest Names Tyson Protein Donor of the Year
SPRINGDALE, Ark. -- Tyson Foods, Inc. here has been named 2007 Protein Donor the Year by Second Harvest, the nation's largest hunger relief organization.
The award from America's Second Harvest - The Nation's Food Bank Network, has been given to Tyson for the company's commitment to distribute protein to help feed those in need. Tyson donated more than four million pounds of poultry and meat products last year to America's Second Harvest food banks. Many of these donations were delivered directly to member food banks, saving thousands of dollars in transportation costs.
Tyson said it has donated more than 48 million pounds of protein over the past seven years to hundreds of food banks and feeding agencies across the U.S. In addition, between 2003 and 2007, Tyson team members raised more than half a million dollars for hunger relief efforts, creating their own branded internal fundraising campaign called "Powering the Spirit."
This year, Tyson said it is providing $10,000 to five America's Second Harvest network members to pilot and launch the "Student Food Drive," which is modeled after a program developed in the Quad Cities on the Iowa-Illinois border. The drive runs from October 9 to November 15 and is designed to unite and empower high school students to help feed the hungry and promote volunterism.
