Shaw's, Irving Oil Renew Discount Gas Program; ShopRite's Heads Into Home Stretch
Until September, shoppers at participating Shaw's Supermarkets stores in Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire will be able to save on gas, thanks to the "Override" program, for which the grocer is teaming with Irving Oil, according to a published report.
The program, a new version of an earlier program from Shaw's and Portsmouth, N.H.-based Irving, started Friday and was renamed Override because it gives consumers the ability to override the price at the pump.
"Override is easy, it's fast, and the best part is you don't have to do anything different than you're already doing today," Harry Hadiaris, Irving's director of business to consumer operations, told Foster's Daily Democrat in Dover, N.H. "Override is the right program at the right time."
The minimum grocery purchase to start saving at Shaw's is $50, which will lower the per-gallon price at the pump by 10 cents. Shoppers can save as much as 60 cents off a gallon, or up to 20 gallons at each fill-up, if their grocery purchase exceeds $300.
Shoppers can use their Shaw's Rewards Card when they buy their groceries. The cashier gives them paper coupons with gas savings based on the amount of their grocery purchase. The coupons can then be redeemed at a participating Irving location. All savings expire 14 days from the date the customer has earned the savings.
The program originally debuted in September 2007 after an eight-week pilot, and ran for a month.
Customers can earn their gas savings at a participating Shaw's stores until Sept. 4, and they can redeem their savings at a participating Irving location until Sept. 18.
West Bridgewater, Mass.-based Shaw's, which employs about 30,000 associates in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Vermont, is a banner of Minneapolis-based Supervalu.
In other gas discount news, this is the last week for ShopRite customers to save gas through a program rolled out June 22. Through July 5, ShopRite customers who use their Price Plus club card and buy $75 worth of any combination of Kraft, General Mills, or Procter & Gamble products in a single purchase will receive a free $25 Shell or BP Gas Card.
Customers who make the required purchase will receive a certificate printed at the bottom of their receipt and redeemable on their next shopping trip. To redeem their certificate customers, they can take a Shell or BP Gas Card from the ShopRite gift card rack, and then present both their certificate and gas card to the cashier for activation. The offer is limited to one gas card per Price Plus customer.
"For customers who do not have a BP or Shell gas station located in their area, a $25 ShopRite Gift Card is available in place of the gas card," noted ShopRite spokeswoman Karen Meleta.
Shoppers can find participating Kraft, General Mills, and Procter & Gamble products by checking the ShopRite weekly circular and finding the free gas symbol.
The 200 ShopRite supermarkets, located in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Delaware, are members of Keasbey, N.J.-based Wakefern Food Corp., a retailer-owned cooperative.
