Shaw's Provides Over 300K Pounds of Food to Charities

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Customers of Shaw's and Star Markets donated 308,748 pounds of food to eight New England food banks, all members of America's Second Harvest-The Nation's Food Bank Network, during Shaw's 8th Annual Spirit of Giving Food Drive.

From Nov. 27 through Dec. 16, 2007 in over 200 stores in New England, the Supervalu banners offered shoppers the opportunity to purchase $5, $10 or $15 bags filled with a nutritionally balanced selection of foods.

"This year Shaw's customers provided more than 50,000 meals to the people The Greater Boston Food Bank serves," noted food bank president and c.e.o. Catherine D'Amato. "The Spirit of Giving Food Drive comes at a critical time of year for low-income families who find themselves often having to choose between paying for food and paying for heat." Fifty thousand meals equates to 64,000 pounds of food.

Super Bowl champion wide receiver Troy Brown and World Series champion pitcher Jonathan Papelbon served as co-celebrity spokesmen for the food drive. Allen's, Barber Foods, Bear Naked, Bush Brothers & Co., Cadbury Schweppes, Campbell Soup Co., ConAgra, Kasanof's, and Kraft Foods sponsored the event.
