ShopRite Coming to Underserved Area of Newark
ShopRite of Newark is set to open its doors on Wednesday, Sept. 30, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Located in the city's underserved Central Ward, the state-of-the art, 70,000-square-foot store will be owned and operated by the Greenstein family, which also owns ShopRite of Brookdale, in Bloomfield, N.J.
Pledging to "be a vital part of the community and a good neighbor," third-generation grocer Neil Greenstein noted: "We call our Brookdale ShopRite the 'supermarket with a heart,' and we plan to bring that same heart, soul and dedication now to serve the city of Newark. We are privileged to be part of this community and all the great new development that is happening in Newark right now."
ShopRite of Newark provides 360 full- and part-time jobs for local residents and will be the anchor for Springfield Marketplace, a mixed-use development that will feature retail shops, restaurants and 152 market-rate apartments when completed later this year.
"This development will address several critical needs in the city: eliminating a 'food desert' in its neighborhood; providing jobs, job training, career development and prosperity to our residents; and adding to the overall prosperity and economic strength of Newark as a whole," said Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka.
