Smithfield Bows Educational Video Series

Smithfield Foods Inc. has launched an educational series of videos offering an in-depth, behind-the-scenes view of pork production and sustainability practices at the Virginia-based company’s Murphy-Brown hog farms. Warsaw, N.C.-based Murphy-Brown LLC is Smithfield’s livestock production subsidiary.

The seven videos, which run from three to 10 minutes each and were shot a Murphy-Brown facilities across the country, are now available on YouTube, SchoolTube and www.murphybrownllc.com.

“These video tours give viewers a close look inside our hog farms and lets people see firsthand how we put our commitment to product quality, food safety and animal care into practice,” noted Murphy-Brown director of government relations and public affairs Don Butler.

“Our goal is to take the mystery out of pork production by answering many of the questions that people ask us,” added Butler. “With this video series, we are inviting the public onto our farms from the comfort of their homes to learn about how we raise our pigs and how our environmental and animal-handling sustainability practices work every day.”

The videos show how piglets begin their life on a sow farm, and what occurs once they’re moved to a nursery farm and then on to a finishing farm. Additionally, Murphy-Brown employees discuss the company’s ISO 14001-certification, the international “gold” standard of environmental management, as well as describing how Murphy-Brown cares for its animals.

Animal behavioral expert Dr. Temple Grandin, professor of animal science at Colorado State University, provides series commentary.

Smithfield Foods is the world’s largest pork processor and hog producer. In the United States, the company is also the leader in various packaged meats categories.
