Smithfield Facilities Recognized for Enviro, Workplace Safety
Smithfield Foods, Inc. received numerous awards for facilities that were recognized for their environmental and worker safety efforts during the recent American Meat Institute Foundation (AMIF) Annual Conference on Worker Safety, Human Resources and the Environment held earlier this month in Kansas City, Mo.
All told, AMIF recognized 129 plants during its Environmental Recognition awards program, which is is a four-tier, voluntary environmental management system toolbox, coupled with an awards program that ranges from simple to complex. The program begins in Tier 1 with a basic package of environmental policy statements and environmental policy compliance criteria, advances through more comprehensive requirements in Tier 2, incorporates a complete Environmental Management System (EMS) model developed in cooperation with the EPA as Tier 3, and culminates with an ISO 14001 EMS, a performance track or state EMS notification as Tier 4. This year, 10 plants were recognized for completing Tier 1; 12 for Tier 2; 65 for Tier 3 and 42 for Tier 4.

"These awards demonstrate our commitment to constantly evolving our environmental and worker safety programs as part of our overall corporate social responsibility program," Treacy added.
Five Smithfield Foods facilities were honored with Environmental Achievement Awards, which are presented to member companies that go beyond environmental compliance by designing and successfully implementing an innovative plant upgrade or environmental program.
Environmental Outreach to the Public

Second Place: Patrick Cudahy, Inc. -- Cudahy, Wis.
Second Place: Premium Pet Health -- Denver, Colo.
Pollution Prevention
First Place: Smithfield Packing Co., Inc. -- Smithfield, Vir.
Resource Conservation
Second Place: John Morrell & Co. -- Cincinnati, Ohio
AMIF also recognized 33 Smithfield Foods facilities with Environmental Recognition Awards, as well as bestowing five Smithfield facilities with recognition for Worker Safety Awards, which are based on evaluation of each eligible facility's actual safety performance, as well as its implementation of various key components of an effective safety and health program.
An additional 23 Smithfield Foods facilities were recognized for outstanding achievements in workplace safety and received Worker Safety Awards.
