Southwest Supermarkets Declares Bankruptcy
PHOENIX, Arizona - Southwest Supermarkets, a private company based in Phoenix, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and hopes to sell 23 of its 32 stores to Bashas', The Arizona Republic reported today. Southwest said it would sell stores to the Food City division of Bashas' and close the rest.
The deal, pending court approval, would mark a significant commitment by Bashas' to the Hispanic market. Food City's store count would jump from 30 to 53 and take the Bashas' chain from 104 to 127.
Bashas' told the newspaper it will offer jobs to the employees of the 23 stores it purchases.
