Spartan Teams With PSI to Keep More Dollars in Mich.

Spartan Stores Inc. has entered a collaborative purchasing agreement with Pharmacy Services, Inc. (PSI) to maximize its purchasing power for Michigan-based independent pharmacies. The deal allows additional volume buying support through a contract with Livonia, Mich.-based pharmaceutical supplier, The Harvard Drug Group, LLC, thus resulting in dollars remaining in the state of Michigan.

Combining their purchasing volume enables both partners to enjoy unique advantages, inclusive of “[promoting] growth, profitability and development of new independent pharmacy businesses, by offering pricing that is competitive based on volume purchasing,” said Eddie Garcia, director of pharmacy for Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Spartan Stores.

“Recognizing the current economic conditions in Michigan, we are proud to support Gov. Granholm’s Michigan First Initiative by offering additional product and service buying opportunities to benefit independent pharmacies in the state of Michigan,” said Dianne Miller, PSI’s COO. “Under the challenging economic environment, this unique relationship will allow independently owned, Michigan-based pharmacies to remain competitive. At the same time, we are happy to support other Michigan-based businesses like Spartan Stores and The Harvard Drug Group to keep more dollars and jobs in Michigan.”

Spartan Stores owns and operates in-store pharmacies throughout its chain of 100 supermarkets in Michigan under the Glen’s Markets, Felpausch, Family Fare, VG’s and D&W Fresh Market banners.

Lansing, Mich.-based PSI is a cooperative buying group representing independent pharmacies and is the for-profit subsidiary of the Michigan Pharmacists Association. PSI has provided programs and services for independent pharmacies throughout Michigan for more than 25 years.
