Stew Leonard's Unit Welcomes Kids to Culinary Camps
Stew Leonard's store in Newington, Conn. will host summer culinary camps for children ages seven to 12, on every other Wednesday beginning June 25 and running though Aug. 20.
The camps will be held upstairs in the Newington store's gourmet kitchen, at a cost of $30 per child, the grocer said. At the camps the children will receive hands-on instruction and learn about the importance of measuring, cooperation skills in the kitchen, and food safety.
As well as tasting the foods they prepare, the children will take part in a "graduation" ceremony in which they will receive a chef's hat and medal after completing the camps, along with the recipes of the dishes they made.
Children don't have to be accompanied by an adult, although parents may observe, said Stew Leonard’s, which is based in Norwalk, Conn. and operates four stores in Norwalk, Danbury, and Newington, Conn. and Yonkers, N.Y.
Sessions include Dough Day, during which children prepare such dough-based
items as pizza and doughnuts; Taste of Italy, with hand-made pasta and complementary sauces on the menu; and Soup’s On, for such soups as clam chowder and cream of broccoli.
