Stop & Shop Honored for Promoting Fruits and Veggies
Stop & Shop was recently recognized by the Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) for its support for “Fruits & Veggies — More Matters®,” which encourages healthy diets through increased fruit and vegetable consumption. Andrea Astrachan, Stop & Shop’s consumer advisor, accepted the award for achieving Role Model status at the Foundation’s board of trustees meeting in San Francisco on April 10.
“People want to eat better, but are sometimes conflicted by different messages about what foods they should eat for optimal health,” said Astrachan, “but in this case, the message is agreed upon and simple — regardless of how many fruits and vegetables you normally consume, you can still benefit from adding more to your diet.”
Here are some innovative ways Stop & Shop is helping customers make healthy dietary choices:
“Stop & Shop is a recognized leader in responding to the health and nutrition needs of consumers,” said Dr. Elizabeth Pivonka, PBH president and CEO. “Their commitment to increasing awareness of the health benefits of fruits and vegetables, and helping consumers turn that awareness into action, sets a high standard within the supermarket industry which plays a critical role in supporting the ‘Fruits & Veggies — More Matters’ message.”

Here are some innovative ways Stop & Shop is helping customers make healthy dietary choices:
- Healthy Ideas. The on-shelf Healthy Ideas symbol from Stop & Shop identifies foods that have less fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. It also ensures that foods bearing the Healthy Ideas symbol are a good source of at least one nutrient (protein, fiber, vitamins A or C, or the minerals calcium or iron).
- Store Explorer Tours. Geared toward elementary school-aged children, Stop & Shop invites schools and community groups to visit a store to learn valuable lessons in healthy eating and to sample unique fruits and vegetables.
- Family Friendly Lanes. For the past two years, Stop and Shop has been rolling out family-friendly lanes — a tabloid-free, candy-free checkout aisle that offers healthy snack alternatives such as yogurt, animal crackers and bottled water. During checkout, young shoppers receive a sticker and an activity sheet designed to encourage them to try a new fruit or vegetable.
