Stop & Shop Updates Passport to Nutrition

Following in the footsteps of its Ahold USA sister banner Giant-Landover, the Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. LLC is offering its updated and expanded “Passport to Nutrition” program to organizations that educate and work with children, like schools, summer camps and scouting groups.

“The Passport to Nutrition program will provide students and their parents with essential information about healthy eating at a time when many schools are facing classroom and programming budget cuts,” explained Arlene Putterman, manager of public and community relations of the Purchase, N.Y.-based Stop & Shop New York Metro Division. “[T]his program will help fill the void by providing essential information to children at no charge to their families or to their school districts.”

Like the materials offered by Giant-Landover, Stop & Shop’s “Passport to Nutrition” kit features student workbooks geared to children ages 8 to12, as well as a teacher guide with lessons that aid kids in making small changes for better health, including how to build a balanced plate using the MyPlate guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and how to read food labels and understand portion sizes.

The kit also provides posters illustrating MyPlate and food labels to visually reinforce lessons learned, along with a DVD featuring challenges, songs and games that can be adapted for classroom use.

Teachers and organizational leaders can obtain a Passport to Nutrition kit by e-mailing a request to [email protected], and educational materials and kit components are also available to download online.

Stop & Shop employs about 63,000 associates at more than 400 stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New York and New Jersey.
