Stop & Shop/Giant Food 'Hero Bands' Raise Over $700,000
QUINCY, Mass. and LANDOVER, Md. -- Stop & Shop and Giant Food Stores have so far raised more than $700,000 from generous shoppers through the sale of patriotic wristbands, the proceeds of which go to help wounded veterans of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.
In just over a month, customers at the two Ahold subsidiaries' stores have bought more than 350,000 of the $2 bracelets, which sport an American flag. All proceeds from the sale of the bands will go to the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, a nonprofit organization providing aid to severely wounded veterans. Funds will help veterans in the states where the retailers operate.
"These soldiers have given so much to us, and we're very fortunate to have the opportunity to give back," noted Stop & Shop/Giant president and c.e.o. Marc Smith. "These brave men and women, some of them now disabled, are trying to lead a normal life back home. Whenever customers purchase a Hero Band, they are helping to make that happen."
The bands are still available at all Stop & Shop and Giant stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. The collected contributions will provide disability-adapted homes for war heroes, emergency financial aid, family support services, job training and placement services, and annual recovery conferences.
