Superior Grocers Teams up With Nestle USA to Help CA Schools

Regional independent Superior Grocers and Nestle USA donated $144,000 to schools in the Southern Calif. Markets served by the grocer.

Representatives from the 144-awarded schools were each presented with a $1,000 donation at a ceremony held at the Superior Grocers store in Montebello, Calif. The funds will help further students' nutrition, health and wellness education, helping them achieve academic potential, physical and mental growth, and lifelong health and well being.

"This is an important educational program," said Mimi Song, president and CEO of Superior Grocers. "In these difficult times, our local schools are in need of many basic supplies and teaching tools for students. We are happy to award these scholarships to the selected schools."

Nestle USA and Superior Grocers started their school donation partnership in 2009 to ensure their shared commitment to supporting healthy families benefitted the grocery chain's area schools. Over the course of the last two years, more than $270,000 in combined funds, school supplies and books have been donated to Southern California schools.

"Nestle is committed to helping families eat healthy by providing healthier food and beverages while helping to further children's health education by supporting local schools," said Vanessa Rivera, manager, marketing communications/multicultural, Nestle USA.

Nestle's contribution is awarded under its integrated consumer and shopper multi-brand program, Construye el Mejor Nido ("Create the Best Nest"). Nestle launched the multi-brand program earlier this year to better connect with U.S. Hispanic families, using Nestle's nutrition, health & wellness expertise to help Hispanic consumers nurture a fulfilling family life.

Glendale, Calif.-based Superior Grocers is a privately-held independent that operates 38 stores in Southern California.
