Supervalu Signs On as EPA GreenChill Partner
Supervalu has plans to enhance its environmental stewardship efforts, joining the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership, an alliance with supermarket companies in which they pledge to adopt technologies, strategies, and practices that reduce ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gas emissions.
Virginia Beach, Vir.-based Farm Fresh is the first of the Minneapolis-based Supervalu's retail banners to participate in the GreenChill partnership with the grand opening of its newest store in Franklin, Va., earlier this week which features an array of advanced refrigeration technology from Hill Phoenix, a leading designer and manufacturer of commercial refrigeration systems.
By signing the GreenChill Partnership pledge, Supervalu has expanded its environmental stewardship efforts by using only non-ozone-depleting refrigerants in all commercial refrigeration applications in new construction and store remodels involving rack additions or replacements; reducing emissions of ozone-depleting and greenhouse gas refrigerants every year; and participating in an industry/government research initiative to assess the performance of advanced technologies.
"As a corporate citizen, Supervalu has a responsibility to minimize our environmental footprint," said John Domino, v.p./facilities, energy, environmental and engineering. "The GreenChill Partnership is another example of our ongoing commitment to reduce waste, use energy more efficiently and operate more sustainably."
Cindy Newberg, acting branch chief of EPA's alternatives and emissions reduction branch commended the retailer/distributor for "demonstrating its clear commitment to preserving the environment."
The GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership is an EPA cooperative alliance with the supermarket industry and other stakeholders to promote the adoption of advanced technologies, strategies, and practices that reduce emissions of ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases. The program requires that supermarket partners make several important commitments that go beyond regulatory compliance by:
-- Establishing a refrigerant inventory and set annual targets to reduce refrigerant emissions;
-- Using only non-ozone-depleting refrigerants in all commercial refrigeration applications in new construction and store remodels involving rack additions or replacements;
-- Collaborating across the industry to identify service and operational practices that reduce emissions;
-- Participating in an industry/government research initiative to assess the performance of cutting edge "green" technologies that reduce refrigerant charge and minimize refrigerant leaks.
