MINNEAPOLIS -- Supervalu here is continuing its long-standing commitment to raise awareness and support hunger relief efforts by partnering with Food for All through for its holiday hunger initiative.

The point-of-sale program, available at Supervalu's Acme, Albertsons, Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher's, Jewel-Osco, Shop 'n Save and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy locations, allows shoppers to purchase a special donation coupon near the check-out stand in amounts of $1, $3 and $5. "Generating awareness for hunger relief through our Food for All initiative remains an important priority for Supervalu," said Mike Jackson, Supervalu's president/COO, who also serves on the Food for All board of directors.

The program, which has various launch dates from banner to banner, officially kicked off last weekend and will wrap by Jan. 6, 2008.

Additionally during the holiday season, Shaw's customers will be able to purchase pre-packaged bags of non-perishable food for locally-based food banks through the supermarket's "Spirit of Giving" food drive.

Collectively in 2006, Supervalu banners distributed more than 37.6 million pounds of food to food banks across the nation. The company also supports hunger relief by offering the Fresh Rescue program in many markets throughout its 2,500-store network, providing local food banks with dairy and meat product donations that have a limited shelf life but are critical components for a healthy diet.
