Tesco Plans to Create More Jobs with International Expansion
Tesco, the UK's biggest supermarket chain, is planning to create up to 20,000 jobs worldwide within the next year as it expands its international operations.
The jobs will be spread through new stores in the UK, Ireland, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Thailand, Korea and Taiwan, Tesco said.
The retailer announced the job creation plans as it unveiled pre-tax profits for the six months to June up 14.2% to #481 million ($704 million), in line with City forecasts.
Sales rose to #11.5bn from #10.1bn in the same period last year, Tesco said.
Tesco's organic growth is the fastest in Europe, a factor in its rise to become the continent's second biggest retailer behind France's Carrefour, according to recent research.
"These results underline the strength of our four-part strategy - a strong core UK business, non food, retailing services and our international business plus the commitment of the whole Tesco team" chief executive Terry Leahy said.
The results follow Tesco's announcement on Monday of price cuts totally #100 million - the biggest in the UK to date - on 3,500 groceries.
The firm is also embarking on the launch of its online shopping in the America, together with US retailer Safeway.
Tesco's UK online operation is profitable before one-off costs, with annual sales of about #300 million.
