Tom Ridge to Keynote Washington, D.C. Food Safety Summit
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The nation's largest food manufacturers and restaurant industry executives will gather at The Food Safety Summit in Washington, DC March 13-15 to discuss how to protect the nation's food supplies from the threat of bioterrorism.
Tom Ridge, White House Director of Homeland Security, will address food industry executives on their role in insuring safe and continuous food supplies. Also speaking at the Summit will be Dr. Lester Crawford, appointed just days ago as Deputy Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. Addressing food security from the business perspective will be Steven S. Reinemund, chairman and CEO of PepsiCo Inc.
In the wake of September 11, the Food Safety Summit has added new security-related topics dealing with the possible risks to the nation's food supply. Topics include protecting food facilities and products from the risks of tampering; preventing food product contamination; assessing threats; and emergency response measures for food facilities. In addition, the Summit will include its usual sessions on guarding against such risks as E-coli, salmonella, and other food borne illnesses. The Summit will take place at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C., March 13-15, 2002.
