Tomoko Moriguchi Matsuno Named CEO of Uwajimaya

SEATTLE -- Tomoko Moriguchi Matsuno yesterday was named Uwajimaya's new c.e.o., succeeding her older brother, Tomio Moriguchi who led Uwajimaya's growth for the past 40 years.

"Tomoko is ready to be c.e.o.," said Tomio Moriguchi. "My sister is the right leader for Uwajimaya as we begin our eighth decade. [Her] challenges will be to grow Uwajimaya's retail business and prepare the next generation of Uwajimaya leaders."

Prior to her appointment, Tomoko was e.v.p. of Uwajimaya's retail group, which consists of the retail stores in Seattle, Bellevue, Wash., and Beaverton, Ore., Kustom Foods, and Retail Central Services. She is also a member of Uwajimaya's board of directors.

She is also active in civic affairs, serving on the boards of the Bullitt Foundation, One Reel, and Montessori Learning Tree School

Last month, she was recognized by Progressive Grocer as one of the top women in the industry.

Tomio Moriguchi will remain chairman of Uwajimaya's board of directors, and will lead Mikan Too, LLC, a sister company that was created to focus on real estate development. Mikan Too's first major project is redevelopment of property near Uwajimaya Village in Seattle's Chinatown-International district. He will continue to be active in civic affairs.

"I've learned much from my parents, brothers and sisters, and welcome the opportunity," said Tomoko Moriguchi Matsuno. "Keys to Uwajimaya's future growth are our employees and managers, and our collective abilities to listen to customers and be an innovator in providing Asian foods to the market place."

In addition to its retail group, Uwajimaya is a joint venture partner with HMS Host for several food and beverage concessions at SeaTac Airport.
