United Supermarkets, Food Bank Team Up for 'Fresh Recovery' Program
United Supermarkets and the Food Bank of West Central Texas have established a "Fresh Recovery" store pickup program that will provide needy families access to fresh food from United's four Abilene locations.
Through the program, United will donate fresh meat, produce, deli items and dairy products that are still usable but are approaching the "sell by" date.
Each day, food bank refrigeration trucks will pick up the donated items from the Abilene stores and take them to the food bank. The food will then be distributed to food bank agencies within 24 hours. United launched a similar program in Lubbock and Amarillo earlier this year.
“This is a wonderful program that will allow us to provide more and more people with fresh food," said Jody Houston, executive director of the Food Bank of West Central Texas, which provides more than 32,000 meals per week to families in need. "The food donations will help fill in the gaps of hunger with nutritious, tasty options for those in need."
Donated products will include fluid milk products, eggs, chilled prepared salads and deli-prepared chilled wrapped sandwiches, raw beef and lunch meat, prepackaged bags of fresh leafy greens, bananas and prepackaged fruits and vegetables.
With its headquarters and distribution center in Lubbock, the family-owned, self-distributing United Supermarkets currently operates 50 stores in 30 markets across north and west Texas under three distinct formats: United Supermarkets, Market Street and Amigos United.
