United Supermarkets to Use NuVal Nutrition Scoring System
Regional independent grocer United Supermarkets, LLC plans to launch the NuVal nutritional scoring system in six of its Market Street stores in the Dallas/Fort Worth area in March 2010, with the program expanding to all 50 of its stores later next year.
“Using NuVal, our guests will have access to an easy and reliable way to determine the most nutritious items in our stores,” said Alicia Brown, United’s health and wellness marketing manager. “No matter what they’re buying, they will have a way to instantly determine the most nutritious foods, whether it’s in pasta or pizza.”
NuVal’s scoring system gives all food a score from 1 to 100, with scores indicated in blue hexagons on shelf labeling, and the higher the score, the higher the nutrition. All NuVal scores are provided on the supermarket shelf, and are designed to make it easier for shoppers to locate nutritious products and to facilitate the comparison of nutritional value between one product and another.
United’s NuVal-scored categories will include meat, seafood, poultry, salty snacks, milk, yogurt, vegetables (fresh, frozen and canned), cereal, bread, cookies, soft drinks and crackers.
With this partnership, the NuVal nutritional system will be available in more than 575 supermarkets in 19 states across the United States. The system is currently in use at Price Chopper, Hy-Vee and Meijer locations.
Lubbock, Texas-based United operates 50 stores under three banners: United Supermarkets, Market Street, and Amigos United. NuVal, LLC is based in Braintree, Mass.
