Wal-Mart to Improve Roads Near Planned Sheboygan Supercenter
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - Wal-Mart has agreed to foot the bill for around $1.5 million in street improvements in the vicinity of a planned 212,000-square-foot supercenter here.
The retailer will build the store on 37 acres on southwest side of Sheboygan, and has considered constructing a second supercenter in the area.
In July the project received conditional approval from the city's plan commission, with the stipulation that funding be found to pay for such traffic improvements as new turn lanes, traffic signals, and wider exit ramps from nearby highways.
Wal-Mart was informed by the financially struggling city that it didn't have the money for the improvements and that no roadwork was scheduled as part of Sheboygan's immediate capital improvement project program, said Paulette Enders, the city's director of planning and development, according to the Associated Press.
After review by the committee, the proposal is slated to return to the full council Nov. 1.
