Wegmans to Adopt 'Rigorous' New Standards for Farmed Shrimp Purchases
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets here said yesterday it will reveal later this month what it called a first-of-its-kind purchasing policy for farmed shrimp that takes into account health and environmental issues.
The chain said it is introducing the policy in collaboration with national environmental advocacy organization Environmental Defense. Wegmans said the program will employ comprehensive and stringent health and environmental standards that will enable it and its shrimp suppliers "to address health and environmental concerns in a measurable and significant way." Wegmans added that the guidelines would "set a new bar for the seafood industry and U.S. retailers."
More details will be forthcoming at a scheduled Oct. 29 teleconference. Wegmans v.p. of seafood Carl Salamone, communications specialist Jeanne Colleluori, and Environmental Defense officials will be on hand to answer questions. Officials at both partner organizations offered no further details yesterday.
Wegmans operates 71 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland.
