Wegmans Announces Sites in Virginia and Maryland
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Wegmans Food Markets recently unveiled plans to broaden their marketing area with stores in Virginia and Maryland.
Leases have been signed for two Northern Virginia sites. One site is in Loudoun County, near Sterling and a few miles north of Dulles Airport. There the company hopes to build a 130,000-square-foot store on a stand-alone site. If all necessary approvals are received, Wegmans hopes to open the store in late 2003 or early 2004.
The second site is located in Fairfax County. A 125,000-square-foot store is planned, but a construction schedule and opening date has not yet been determined. Rezoning and site plan approval are needed.
Wegmans is also working on a site in Baltimore County, where they hope to purchase approximately 20 acres adjacent to other major retailers. The site, on which they hope to build a 130,000-square-foot store, must go through a Planned Unit Development Commercial Rezone, a special process that could take nine months to a year to complete. No construction schedule or projected opening date was announced.
On May 19, 2002, Wegmans will open a store in State College, Pa., followed by the opening of a store in Nazareth, Pa., later this year. They also will open a store in Downingtown, Pa., in 2003.
