Wegmans Food Markets’ first-ever store within New York City is set to open in the Admiral’s Row development in Brooklyn – formerly the Brooklyn Navy Yard – on Oct. 27, according to the company. The Rochester, N.Y.-based grocer first revealed its intention to build the 74,000-square-foot store in 2015.

The hiring process for 150 full-time employees began in January and is continuing. The store will employ a total of 500 associates, most hired from the surrounding area.

“Although the opening is still several months away, new employees begin in-depth training soon after they’re hired so that they’re knowledgeable and fully prepared to deliver incredible customer service,” noted Store Manager Kevin Cuff, a 21-year employee who started with the company as a part-time parking lot attendant. “Wegmans has a long-standing reputation as an exceptional employer, with tremendous opportunity for career growth and development.”

Wegmans Brooklyn will carry more than 60,000 products, including extensive restaurant-quality prepared food offerings, 4,000-plus organic products, fresh seafood delivered whole and cut to order daily, hundreds of produce items, and 300 varieties of imported and domestic cheese. The location will also feature a second-floor mezzanine with a bar serving food and wine, beer and spirits.

Family-owned Wegmans operates 99 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts. The company is No. 14 on Progressive Grocer’s 2018 Super 50 list of the top grocers in the United States.
