Winn-Dixie Finishes 100th Store Remodel
Less than 18 months since it first said it planned to remodel each of its 521 supermarkets, Winn-Dixie said yesterday it has polished off its 100 remodel, a store in the Miami suburb of Hialeah that is celebrating its grand opening today.
The Jacksonville, Fla.-based chain said it plans to have remodeled full half its store base by the middle of 2010.
"This is not only a milestone for our company, but it also symbolizes the hard work and dedication of our associates and the loyalty of our customers," said Peter Lynch, the chain's chairman, c.e.o., president, and chief architect of the grocer's ongoing turnaround. "It's all about being fresh and local - from our dEcor to our merchandising and marketing initiatives, we are tailoring every detail of our remodeled stores to meet the needs of neighborhoods we serve. As the remodel program moves forward, we will have a significantly stronger store base from which to compete and leverage the strength of our brand."
This latest revamped unit features an updated storefront that opens into an expanded produce and floral departments. The store has wider aisles, warmer lighting, and a more inviting center store, Winn-Dixie said. The grocer also upgraded the deli and bakery with a wood-burning rotisserie and bread warmer, a wing bar, an olive bar, and a specialty dessert case.
The store also employs new energy-efficient refrigerators and frozen food cases.
Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. operates 521 supermarkets, including more than 400 in-store pharmacies, in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, and Mississippi.
