Woman Finds Black Widow Spider in Grapes
MAYNARD, Mass. - A shopper in Maynard, Mass., was surprised to find a black widow spider in a bunch of grapes she bought from her local supermarket.
According to a local news report, the woman brought the grapes home, then took them out of the bag, washed them and put them in a plastic container.
She then noticed what appeared to be a black spider walking up the side of the grapes.
She said that she called police, who killed the spider and advised her to take it to the Board of Health.
Maynard Board of Health Director Gerry Collins inspected the spider and later confirmed that it was a black widow spider.
The grapes were purchased at a Shaw's Supermarket in Stowe, Mass.
"An occasional spider is an unfortunate, but rare, result of the growers' efforts to reduce the use of pesticides," a Shaw's representative told a local reporter.
