    NEW YORK - Coinciding with the seventh annual National Coupon Month (September), the Promotion Marketing Association (PMA) Coupon Council released 2003 coupon distribution and usage data that showed manufacturers offered more than $250 billion in coupons in 2003, resulting in $3 billion in consumer savings.
  • Northern California Labor Rallies As Contract Talks Near

    SALINAS, Calif. - A rally in support of Bay Area grocery employees whose contract expires Sept. 11 took place Monday afternoon at the Salinas Sports Complex Rodeo Room here, with local elected officials in attendance, including Santa Cruz mayor Scott Kennedy, who plans to introduce a resolution supporting grocery workers at the Sept. 14 Santa Cruz City Council meeting. Local community and religious leaders were also present.

    SEATTLE ¿ Following a four-month effort, the United Food & Commercial Workers union and grocery chains in the Seattle metropolitan area have approved a three-year contract, accepting health care payments but avoiding a two-tier pay plan sought by employers.

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The North Carolina Food Dealers Association and the North Carolina Retail Merchants Association have announced plans to merge. Once the deal is completed Oct. 1, a new N.C. Food Dealers Council will be established within the Retail Merchants Association (NCRMA).
  • U.S. Chamber Backs Wal-Mart in Suit

    WASHINGTON - The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is supporting Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s fight to have a judge's order approving class-action status for a large sex-discrimination lawsuit against the retailer thrown out. The chamber, which represents U.S. businesses, filed a brief in support of Wal-Mart dated July 13, according to an Associated Press report.
  • Fancy Food Show Tests Longer Hours

    NEW YORK - Show floor hours at the 50th Annual Summer Fancy Food Show were extended two hours daily in an experiment inspired by retailer requests. This year the show, which concluded its run at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center here on Tuesday, ran from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
  • Seattle Grocery Workers Reject Contract Proposal, Lobby Community

    SEATTLE - The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1105, which represents 17,000 grocery workers in the Seattle area, has rejected the latest proposal of Albertsons, Safeway, and Kroger, which owns QFC and Fred Meyer, and is lobbying the community to back the employees, according to the Seattle Times.
  • Report: HBC Spending by Ethnic Consumers Hits $1.5 Million

    New York - General, rather than ethnic-specific, product appeal is the key to growth in the ethnic cosmetics and beauty care market, according to a new report from market research publisher Packaged Facts, "The U.S. Market for Ethnic Cosmetics, Hair Care, and Beauty Products."
