The chain is rumored to be considering supermarket chain J Sainsbury, among others, as a target, although retail analysts told Progressive Grocer they question the likelihood that the mass merchant would make such a move in the ultracompetitive U.K. retail market.

    SAN FRANCISCO - Shirley "Rae" Ellis, a Costco assistant warehouse manager in Douglas County, Colo., filed a national sex discrimination class action yesterday in federal court here, claiming that the Issaquah, Wash.-based warehouse club chain doesn't give female employees promotions to high-paying assistant and general store manager positions.

    BOGOTA, Colombia - Carulla Vivero S.A., Colombia's second-biggest retailer, has chosen Toronto-based brand strategy and design consultancy Watt International, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Envoy Communications Group, to lead the repositioning and design of the company's 83 Carulla stores. Carulla Vivero operates a chain of 133 supermarkets, hypermarkets, and discount stores throughout Colombia.
