Former United Supermarkets executive Dan Sanders has been named president of Supervalu’s Philadelphia-based Acme Markets division.

Sunbury, Pa.-based regional independent Weis Markets’ Hanover, Pa., store has earned silver certification from the GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership, a voluntary Environmental Protection Agency alliance with food retailers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change.

Weis Markets, Inc. posted an 8 percent sales increase of $671 million in the forth quarter vs. $619 million for the same period in 2008, while same store-sales were up 2 percent.

In the wake of the devastation in Haiti following the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in over 200 years, food retailers across the United States acted swiftly to raise funds to help the many victims.

Weis Markets and Altoona, Pa.-based convenience store operator Sheetz, Inc. have expanded their joint gas rewards program at Weis’ newly remodeled store in Shippensburg, Pa., as well as the grocer’s Chambersburg, Pa., store, according to a published report.

In its ongoing bid to cater to cost-conscious consumers, Weis Markets, Inc. has initiated another price-lowering campaign, this time on 2,600 staple items, including private label and brand-name products in center store/dry grocery, produce, frozen, dairy, meat, deli and bakery.

Weis Markets’ month-long “Fight Hunger” food drive generated $210,000 in customer food and monetary donations to local food banks and pantries throughout its five-state marketing area, which will be complemented by $200,000 in corporate donations to eight regional food banks.

Scott Frost has been named to oversee all aspects of regional retailer Weis Markets’ accounting and financial aspects on a permanent basis with his recent promotion to VP, CFO and treasurer.
