  • Top Global Retailers See Shakeup in '06: Report

    LONDON -- The latest research from Planet Retail here highlights major changes in the ranking of the world's largest grocery retailers. Its recently published "Top 30 Grocery Retailers Worldwide 2006" report and ranking ousted Dutch grocer Ahold from its top five position, with Japanese hypermarket/convenience store operator Seven & I taking its place.

    BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. said yesterday its same-store sales in April declined 3.5 percent -- its worst monthly same-store sales results in at least 28 years, according to the Wall Street Journal. The retailer blamed this year's early Easter, along with challenging economic conditions for consumers, for the negative performance.

    CHICAGO -- Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Hamco, Inc., in cooperation with the office of the Illinois Attorney General, are voluntarily initiating a replacement program for certain bibs manufactured by Hamco and sold exclusively at Wal-Mart stores in Illinois from June 2004 through March 2007. The bibs may contain lead in excess of Illinois limits.
